Congratulations to Alan Nones of DefTac Mojo Gym and Jasmine Cuizon of DefTac Makati and DefTac AIC Ortigas! The two were promoted at the DefTac General Assembly on Saturday night, June 16 at B.A.M.F. MMA Center.

Your hard work has paid off! Time for the next step in your Jiu-Jitsu training journey! Cheers!

One Hyundai Club: Life In Style was at the gym the afternoon of June 16. Members get to enjoy premium reward items, journeys and experiences, alongside a bunch of other benefits. One of those perks is DefTac Jiu-Jitsu!

The introductory course and self-defense seminar took place the day before Father’s Day, and was appropriately, a Father-Son bonding activity. Predictably, it was one dad and a bunch of kids, but the Papa Bear was a good sport and seemed to have a good enough time. Taking charge of the days lessons were beloved blue belts Franco Rulloda and Jed Monte.

After a preliminary talk and a warm-up, the coaches went into a detailed exposition of the rear naked choke. You could clearly see the caution taken as they taught the technique, even going on to warn the kids never to do the move on anyone, even just for demonstration. They then proceeded to a simple application of the move – spinning an attacker and taking him down. The next step was a shoulder throw defense against the choke. The coaches made clear that leverage and momentum are keys to performing the techniques: not strength.

At the formal end of the lesson was a Q&A session, particularly on how to use Jiu-Jitsu in a variety of dangerous scenarios such as multiple and armed attackers, and how to escape the mount. Although the coaches demonstrated possible techniques, they clearly put emphasis on avoidance as the first choice – if a threat failed to hurt you, you’ve won.
